For Trainers - Your health check

Check how you are performing as a training provider for your organisation:

  • Do you have a training strategy or plan that supports the company corporate objectives?
  • Do you employ a good mix of external and internal trainers to ensure balance and creativity within your training plan?
  • Do you encourage non training personnel to work alongside your trainers as part of their development?
  • Do you benchmark your training activities against other similar organisations?
  • Are you able to measure the success of your training programmes?
  • Do you have a quality ‘on the job’ training programme where you use competencies and a professional system for storing training records?
  • Are your ‘on the job’ trainers adequately trained?
  • Do you receive feedback from your customers – the trainees and their managers?

Would you like some ideas for enriching your training provision?

Training in action - The Power of Training

Tom Peters when  listing the essentials of successful management included in his list one line which read:

“train, train, train”

If you stop training, then your training, like marketing will only be missed when the business begins to suffer and the cost for remedial work is higher than the cost of what you would have paid for training in the first place. Free training, when you can get it is sometimes one creative way of saving money when budgets are tight. However, free training only works if it gives you the desired results which are change of behaviour and skilled people using their skills positively for the benefit of your company and your people.  Free training does not always give you this and neither does a qualification. What you need in your organisation is highly skilled and motivated employees working for your cause. They may have qualifications, the training may be free or purchased but the end result needs to be seen in action,  not just on paper.

Syd Strike Training has helped numerous companies to enjoy improved performance and motivation through the many and varied training programmes we offer as well as through our consultancy services. Here are some examples of the power of training:

One wise MD employed Syd Strike Training as part of his programme to win a London rail franchise. We worked alongside the directors and senior management team providing leadership coaching, first line manager training, staff motivation programmes, Investor in People support and a host of other training interventions during the two year period leading up to the bid. The bid team and everyone else in the organisation pulled together to achieve the corporate objectives, the first being ‘to win the bid’. We won the bid.

Over several years we supported the Environment Agency providing consistent customer care training across all eight regions including Wales. The commitment of the Environment Agency to provide excellent customer service for all stakeholders was a priority and the results were tangible, being evidenced by higher standards, compliment letters and achieved KPIs.

KPIs was also a measurable result achieved through our contract with the Serco Highways Agency project. Our approach to this project was to conduct a ‘Motivation and Performance Audit’ (MAPA) which  produced the data we needed to produce an effective training plan to work alongside the excellent work being performed by the senior management team. The Head of Operations, Scott White summed it up in the testimonial he gave us:

“Syd Strike’s management development training was exactly what we needed to help us during a time of significant change and has made a significant improvement in our leadership skills. We are now achieving all of our KPIs."
Scott White, Head of Operations, Serco National Traffic Control Centre, Birmingham

Our ‘Motivation and Performance Audit’ was the starting point for a small family soap manufacturing company whose owner and MD emailed us to ask us to help him ‘release people potential’. This project resulted in a number of interventions including facilitating a change of culture programme, management training, executive coaching and designing an appraisal system. The results were outstanding and we were able to encourage further progress when the Managing Director took our advice and employed a part–time Human Resources Manager. It was our privilege to help a small family business expand.

A managing director from a chemical company asked us to deliver a team building event for his senior management team. After two hours free consultation with Syd he changed his mind. Syd’s facilitation had helped the MD to realise that the problem he was trying to solve lay elsewhere and so a more relevant change programme was implemented. The senior team did eventually enjoy a very fruitful residential business planning event, facilitated by Syd ... when the time was right, of course.

There are numerous examples of ‘the power of training’ including outsourcing, sourcing free training that is relevant and effective, providing mentoring programmes, outplacement support, management development programmes, marketing and improving sales targets.

Quote of the Month

JHJ on training

“....one simple game contained in it practically all the lessons that one needed about teamwork, involvement, mutuality of respect, the ability to recognise contributions, no matter where they come from, the importance of multiple skills, and the need to stay together, and produce a solution which was good enough”
