Management Development

Keep ahead of the game

Improve your management skills

Overcome the problems of downsizing by improving team motivation and managing efficiently

Can your company afford to employ ‘average’ managers?

At a time when budgets are being slashed and top management rightly question spending can you afford to be an average manager? CEOs and MDs are looking for effective solutions to the problems caused through having to do more with less. And what is the answer? Switched on managers who are able to help the business grow despite the economic climate.

It is true. Look at every workplace disaster, every underperforming department, and every discordant team and you will usually find a manager who is failing in one or more areas. And it is not always the fault of the manager. Managers need training and support as much, if not more than other groups of employees.

2011 is the year of opportunity. They say that ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’. We need good managers to build and sustain our business. Developing yourself as a manager is not really an option. Poor performing managers literally damage the business and their careers.

We invite you to participate in a unique management development programme 2011. Through participating in this programme you can be sure that you are trained, equipped and prepared to deliver the goods and motivate your team. Our standard programme consists of 12 modules listed below. However the programme is flexible and you choose your subjects.

Module 1 – Out of the comfort zone

This is an extremely powerful self awareness course where you will participate in management activities and self awareness activities to learn about your management behaviour and the affect you have upon your team. This module is driven by facilitation and is designed to create more questions than answers. You will leave this course with a desire to learn more and to make some immediate changes in the workplace.

Module 2 - Leadership skills & leadership styles

This module allows managers to explore a range of theories and models and through group discussion, case studies and feedback from your direct reports you will be able to choose appropriate models and behaviours to put into practice back at work.

Module 3 - Focussed leadership

Managers learn how to be focussed and effective with goal setting. You will learn to ‘manage where it matters’ so that goals become meaningful and achievement becomes an everyday occurrence.

Module 4 - Managing efficiently in a downsizing environment

This module will help managers think outside of the box, offer some basic problem solving models including change models, deviation models, decision making etc and will guide you to specific solutions to situations within your own working environment.

Module 5 - Performance management – developing a strategy

Based on CIPD guidelines for managing performance you will explore the various tools and techniques for managing performance including 360 degree feedback, standard setting, KPIs etc, feedback and coaching, appraisals and reviews, development, managing behaviour, documentation, team building, communication and consultation. You will leave the course with a strategy for managing performance or for improving the way performance is managed within your sphere of responsibility.

Module 6 - Performance management – skills (behaviour)

This is a skills development course where managers learn and practice skills that manage behaviour including listening, giving feedback, supporting, the soft challenge, assertiveness, dealing with aggressive and challenging employees etc. Video feedback is available and is optional.

Module 7 - Soft skills and emotional intelligence

This course helps managers to understand emotional intelligence and learn skills to become more aware of emotions and the need to be able recognise and manage emotions to be a successful leader. The course draws on the competencies provided by Daniel Goleman and provides help and skills through case studies discussion and activities.

Module 8 - Developing high performing teams

This event will engage managers in sharing ideas and drawing from their experiences to identify the functions of the leader that will motivate, empower and develop high performing teams. During this course you will enjoy working on team problems followed by review sessions to facilitate learning and produce ideas for developing high performing teams.

Module 9 - Motivation skills – how to measure and improve motivation

An intriguing module that is a blend of exploring theory versus reality, comparing notes, looking at recent evidence provided by the trainer and learning a tried and tested model to measure and improve motivation. This module is a ‘must’ for every manager who truly wants to be a leader!

This module is designed to give managers the opportunity to learn and practise skills associated with coaching, mentoring and giving feedback, for example questioning, listening skills, guiding, facilitating, observing, planning etc.

Managers will learn how to help employees to embrace differences in their workplace. The module is delivered as an enjoyable learning activity with group discussion and learning, covering diversity awareness, managing workplace conflict, helping employees to be responsible for their own behaviour, what to do when problems exist and issues arise etc.

Module 12 – Effective communication

Communication is one of the key issues raised in most employee surveys and one of the greatest concerns raised by employees about managers. Scott White, Head of Operations, Serco National Traffic Control Centre, Birmingham

“Syd has supported me in my HR work for several years now and I have witnessed first hand the positive effects of his motivational and performance assessments, followed by some excellent management and leadership training that has made a powerful impact on performance.”
Margaret Marsh, Human Resources Director, Guildford College

"Syd’s own work experience and his particularly positive and enthusiastic delivery style have significantly contributed to this progress.  He makes the sessions fun and enjoyable, he has a gift of making the theory interesting as well as practical (and certainly no ‘death by powerpoint’) but equally ensures the important messages are not avoided and are clear.  Syd also challenges thinking and behaviour in an honest but not confrontational way.

This programme and particularly Syd’s skilled techniques and guidance has provided everyone undertaking it, the opportunity to recognise how much their individual and collective behaviour affects the culture of the service and the behaviour of the people they work with and manage.  The success we have had so far has been in improved relationships with our teams, improved communication, creating a service that is more innovative, that recognises and appreciates the need for change.  This has also been a contributing factor in increasing productivity and delivering continuous improvement."
