Avoid difficulties by removing problems that exist around peoples’ roles.
Sort out the balance between operating within systems and operating with initiative.
Make room for talent even if it is sometimes unorthodox.
Make provision to meet the personal needs of individuals.
Solve peoples’ problems and watch morale improve.

Team Building - Team Tangle

A fun game for an icebreaker and a little team bonding

(Not to be played if you have a bad back or you are pregnant)

Team Tangle

Get the delegates to form a circle and cross their arms as if to do Auld Lang Syne – However don’t hold hands.

Now ask the delegates to hold opposite hands with two different people across the circle – but not with the person to the immediate left or right.

You should now have a ‘team tangle’.

Tell the delegates to untangle without letting go of hands.

Afterward you may discuss team working and who did what or just let them enjoy the activity – it was for fun !

NB SAFETY - DO NOT LET THEM RAISE THEIR FEET
ABOVE GROUND LEVEL

Leadership and team building at Jurys Inn Sheffield

When Jon Broadhurst took on the role of General Manager at Jurys Inn Sheffield he was faced with the challenge of a new job and a new team as several of his management team, including his Deputy and his HR Manager were new to the team.

John decided to tackle the problem with a double barrelled approach bringing the leadership team together to learn leadership skills and work together as a team during a leadership and team building event led by Syd Strike.

In December 2011 John took the team to a nearby hotel, taking the managers from the daily distractions of work while they participated in a unique training event.  When introducing Syd, John told his managers that he and Syd had worked together on some exciting and successful programmes during his time with Swallow Hotels, when Swallow was part of Vaux Breweries. John said he was pleased to be working with Syd again and was very happy to recommend him to his team.

The days programme consisted of an input on standards presented by the Deputy General Manager, Georgina Wylie  who made important Jurys Inns standards come to life in a well prepared presentation, and helped managers and supervisors appreciate how applying standards in the workplace enhances customer satisfaction and improves profit. Syd then delivered a series of leadership and team building activities followed by review sessions to help the team appreciate key leadership skills, work in harmony as a leadership team, support their team members and implement standards to improve performance and exceed customer expectations. The last session of the day was presented by Jon giving his management team information on key objectives for 2012. Jon’s comments at the end of the day were ‘a really useful business day, with some strong team building elements.’ Jon wasted no time arranging the next session in January when Syd delivered an event that focused on leadership skills and objective setting. The managers were given a template for setting objectives and the whole management team left the event feeling highly motivated, and had an action plan to produce department objectives designed to support the hotel objectives. Phase three is planned to develop skills around performance management. Syd will deliver this event basing the content around a CIPD report on performance management.

Syd and his highly experienced team of trainers have delivered several events on goal setting, building the management team and performance management for a wide variety of companies and organisations. If you would like to explore the potential of taking your management team through similar events do let us know.
