What’s Missing?
The tick box is full. The manager attended the course. But we all know it’s not about ticking the box. What you want having invested in management training is visible and often dramatic change of behaviour.
So what’s missing in training? The problem is that there is no ‘C’ in training. ‘C’ for collaboration. All too often people are ‘sent’ for training to resolve an issue. This may be time management, team working, problem solving or perhaps assertiveness. But training alone is not usually the answer. Effective management involves training and coaching linked to management support and collaboration between three groups:
1. Manager
2. Employee
3. Trainer
Sometimes manager and trainer never even meet each other as the HR person acts as broker. Surely this cannot be right!
Whilst there is no set formula for successful training there are some principles to consider, and without doubt the experience and skill of the trainer will be key to resolving people issues and skills gaps in the workplace. However, the catalyst that brings it all together is ‘collaboration’. Perhaps that’s why many companies appreciate the benefits of bringing in training consultants. Too expensive you may say.
